Happy 6th Birthday Oliver

This was a great party! Once we got over the dog almost eating the birthday cake - it was all good! The reptile show was a huge hot with the kids and the adults alike and it was a good easy crowd. Nice to start to host things in the new house too -it’s a great place for entertaining! June was a good month, although you can feel all the kids starting to unravel in readiness for the summer vacation. Concentration starts to drift, attention spans get shorter. Ah - let the summer begin!

Turning 40

Reflecting back on turning 40 I can’t say I experienced it as the turning point people often talk about. It really just passed like any other birthday. Some anxiety about the festivities, followed by much enjoyment of the festivities. Any middle-aged angst - what am I doing with my life type questions? Well, let’s just say not any more than usual.
There has been so much going on this year, to those that know us you know what I’m talking about, most of it good, amazingly good. I don’t feel I’ve had a moment to stop and think. The biggest decision was deciding to get an au pair. I’m hoping that out of that, I’ll have a bit more time to think about finding some kind of job, or maybe going back to college doing some postgraduate work. Maybe an MA. There I said it out loud. We’ll see. I need to figure out first what in. Photography seems the most likely. I did do a creative writing course, but didn’t really stick with it. That’s my main problem right now, sticking with things. I never used to be such a flake.
So maybe that’s it, the big lesson about turning 40s. Time to commit to something. Time to figure out, now the children are getting a bit older, what’s next…

Lola Turns 3 Years Old

I can’t believe our little girl has turned 3. Coming in at a healthy 32 pounds and 36.5 inches, she is growing every day and is crazy smart.

We celebrated her birthday with a fantastic party - you can see the photos here on Flickr. A lot of folks, a lot of kids, with our core group of friends who stayed on at the end whilst the kids settled down to a movie - perfect.

Here are some of Lolie’s gems:

besert - dessert
comfyball - comfortable
psghetti - spaghetti

She is also writing L for Lola, O for Oliver and T for turtle.

The list goes on! I love you my girl. You really are a girl of passion, joy and wit.
The world will be your playground.

Oliver’s 3rd Birthday

The Boys

Originally uploaded by taylorkydd

Oliver’s birthday was fun, rewarding, exhausting, hilarious and manic!

Best Party Game? Baseball runaround. Steven organized the activities - groups of kids pitching, others trying to bat - it was chaotic, random and perfect. And Meme, with the whizzing balloons - stroke of genius.

Culinary Highlight? Well, I could say the salad pizza from Abbots which was a huge hit. But, the cake. Well, that was something else. Some people thought I was crazy to bake. How about cupcakes? They would say. Gelson’s does great cakes! They would assure me. Sure there was a little bit of freaking out in the days prior, but I had faith, I knew it would all work out. And so it did. Victoria sponge, raspberry and cream cheese filling - can you think of anything yummier?

Favorite gift? Tow Mater (from the movie cars), his scooter (from Grandpops) and a helicopter from his friend Asta. All trucks, all action, all the time.

Star performer? Meme and Oliver tie for this one. Meme with running around all week helping me organize. Invaluable. And Oliver. He had the best day - running, running, running, playing with his friends, perfectly happy to be the center of attention. I think it’s all about pacing. We didn’t wind him up all morning, it was very low key and he totally rose to the occasion.

Someone is having some fun!

Someone is having some fun!

What a great day today - I get home and the kids are having a play date with the cousins. They are all having a blast, but I’m kinda bummed to be missing so much of this. Work is great too - which makes it even harder. You just can’t be in two places at once, something has to give. Right now, this is the choice I’m making and I feel its the right one, deep down. But I do need to fid better balance, I’m missing too much. After we launch Intent it will get easier - and we get some more funding…

Anyway - I love this photo of Lola - it just captures how much fun she was having.

This week is crazy - organizing Oliver’s third birthday party! Going to be a lot of kids which won’t make Steven happy! Baseball is the theme. I’m looking forward to it - altho starting to stress a bit about the cake…

Days of Summer

Today has been a scorcher. It was only last week that temps were down in the 60s (shocking I know!) but today soared to the 90s. It was Carter’s birthday so we trooped off to Will Rogers Park for the festivities. God it was hot. At least 30, three and four year olds tearing around in the heat - you would imagine a potential recipe for disaster. But the whole thing went superbly and everyone had a great time.

Carter I think was a little overwhelmed - but I’ve no doubt he’ll remember that birthday forever.

I’d never seen Oliver doing any kind of group sports before and I have to say he was damn good! And he so enjoyed it. I’ve started nagging Steven about taking him to soccer practice again - nothing too intense, just a chance to run around with other boys - and a fun way for the two of them to spend time together.

That being said I tried to look away as Oliver careened into other boys, I was so worried about his recent cut (from running in to the kitchen island - long story!) but it was all fine of course. Lola had a ball - running around in the sprinkler. Chilled as always.

Thank goodness the climbing in the crib ended as soon as it began - under threat of no more Bob the Builder! Lola is sleeping better too - we’ve started feeding them up right before bed which seems to be doing the trick.

So now it’s 6pm on a Saturday, evening, tired from playing tickle bug and hide and seek and running around in the backyard. Bee movie beckons. I am profoundly happy.

Well we finally got it together and Lola had a wonderful first birthday party!

So what if it did rain, at least we were all over our various maladies - finally! Her cousins came as well as a bunch of family friends - a perfect number of folks - the Waislers, her pal Rowan, Claire and her daughter Leila, Uncle Morgan of course (Boink!), Philip & Miyuki, a very pregnant Chris with husband Aussie Matt. In short a houseful.

I baked a cake and there was much hilarity with the birthday girl very much master of her domain, running around, quite literally, running.

Walking is so old hat, now we have to run.

Happy birthday sweet Lola.

Letter to Lola

Dearest Lola,

Today is your first birthday and it has been a funny old day to say the least. Your brother has been sick with the flu, it has been raining for a week nonstop, and your party ended up being postponed a week with the chaos of it all.

In your usual fashion though, you have braved all this adversity with cheeky grins and sunny smiles. Rolling through the day with aplomb, unfazed, enjoying your gifts and amusing yourself.

You’re walking and quacking and charming us all. We love you. Happy birthday sweet girl.

with endless love
your Mama

Happy Birthday!

Originally uploaded by taylorkydd.

Oliver turned two today!! Yippee! Very exciting all round. There was lots of Thomas action and the “choo choos” were a big hit. Bianca came with an easle and finger paints which also proved to be a winner - and to to it all - a plasma car which I personally can’t wait to check out.

Oliver’s languae is really exploding now - he is becoming much more confident with just trying new words and often repeats new ones immediately. It’s a joy to see it all coming together. It is so true what they say that it all starts happening when they turn two. this morning we got a “hello” instead of the usual whimpering when he woke up - heaven!!

Saturday we’re having a picnic/softball game at Will Rogers - can’t wait! Very casual, low key - fun.

Happy Birthday!

Steven’s birthday started off on a good note - contractions at 7am. Now coming every 6 mins or so. Was hard to tell at first as we have had some stomach flu this week. But now pretty certain. More later.
