Connection

Papa & OI couldn’t figure out which of these pics to blog - I love them both so much - so what the hell - two updates in one day. This was Oliver in his fave spot - on the big bed with his Papa. I think he likes it so much as we can lay down with him and coo and cuddle - max affection/attention time. What’s not to love?

So what’s new in the land of O?
Well… wait for it… rolling over! From his back to his tummy - Oliver accomplishes the roll with aplomb. First attempt saw the hands trapped to his side as he kinda rolled on to them, but it wasn’t long before he sussed that out. Now he rolls over and then props himself up on his elbows. Yeah I know - and he’s *only* 5 and a half months old. Genius.

Morning Walks

Every morning, from anytime between 5.30 and 6.30am, my husband takes my son out for a walk. He has done this each and every day since Oliver was born and I can’t count the ways this is important to our little family.

Obviously for me, on a very selfish level, it’s wonderful. After such a light sleep, always attentive to the hunger cry that rouses me from my slumber, this is the one time I can truly let go. Getting up to feed Oliver now is totally manageable, and I’ve actually come to look forward to our nighttime meetings. It’s a sacred, quiet time for the two of us, he is such a calm and needling little creature, it’s a moment of pure love. But when morning comes and Steven gets up to take him out - I hear that front door shut and I sink into the most delicious sleep. It’s a precious moment - the sheets feel softer, the house, quieter and I sleep more deeply and restfully, safe in the knowledge that for that one hour, or maybe longer, I won’t be needed by anyone. It’s a true indulgence that I deeply appreciate.

But more importantly than that - and I don’t underestimate how important it has been for me personally, I was reflecting today on what a wonderful time it is for the two of them. Sometimes O will sleep, sometimes not, sometimes he will cry, sometimes not, soemtimes they will visit the boats, sometimes not. But whatever they do together, it’s the one time of the day when it’s just the two of them. Often you hear how this early in life the infant’s main focus is the mother, but in our little family, Oliver looks to both of us equally, and I think this special time he shares with his father has contributed enormously to that. When Steven enters the room, O looks to him attentively and watches him constantly. How precious are these times for them, what memories in the making.

For those reading this - I know you’re out there - what are some of the memories you remember most sharing with your kids? Or when you were a kid?

Proud Papa

Forgive me Blog for I have sinned, it has been too long since my last post….

Just moments ago I had Oliver on my lap watching the Red Sox win game 1 of the season-ending three day series with the Yankees. Not only was he actively watching the game, but moments after he laid his eyes on the screen, the Sox scored two runs. I know there will be years of heartache to come for the boy with our beloved Sox…. but for now we celebrate. First Sox game I recall so vividly watching/listening to games with my father. He would explain the rules, the strategy, and point out things that I should try on the field in the years ahead. He would also point out players with character — and those who were lacking in that department. I tried my best to emulate the players my father said had “class”…even if they were on the Yankees. I look forward to sharing similar lessons with Oliver in the years ahead.

There is something so special about summer afternoons in Maine listening to the game over a crackly AM station while riding in the pick-up truck. Sometimes… that is the only way to “watch” a game.
