Good times

Oakwood park has become a favorite hang out for the kids and I - usually after school. We take snacks and drinks and run around with whoever is there, sometimes Romeo and Clover, sometimes Charlie. This day featured the whole crew, and the high jinks on the slide resulted in much hilarity.

Growing up

I love this photo of Oliver. He is growing up so fast now. Still calls me “meow meow”, still comes into our bed at night. But now can dress himself, even put on socks and shoes. Cannot wait to do things “all by myself”.
Will say “I love you meow meow” when you least expect it. Loves forts, reading stories, Phiineas and Ferb, to jump and chase, to wrestle and tickle. Dislikes soccer and gymnastics, not much of a dancer and can’t lie to save himself. Trying to trick anyone results in him dissolving into fits of giggles. Oh and we’re learning our letters and sounds and starting to put them together.

Mum, I love going underwater, it’s my favorite thing…

Can you imagine a better thing to hear? This was Oliver after his swimming lesson - where we’ve had a big breakthrough in the last two weeks. Head is under the water, flippers on, arms flailing. Such a difference from the beginning of the summer - incredible. Seems all the lessons, days at the lily pond - oh and maybe falling off the dock without a life jacket - actually are paying off! Needless to say Lola is keeping right up with him and is a little fish already!

Deep Dive

Why are they looking so pensive in this shot? Well might you ask. This was the day Oliver decided to go for a swim off the dock.
He had been all set to take the dingy, with Loring and Steven out to the lobster boat. Standing between the two of them, by the edge of the dock, Oliver tripped and went head-first into the water.

I didn’t even see exactly what happened, I was coming down the gangplank with Cerentha and Lola, so it all felt a bit surreal. All I saw was Oliver standing on the dock dripping wet and Steven and Loring still in the water. The two of them had dived in immediately after Oliver fell, Loring getting under Oliver and pushing him up into Steven’s arms. Whole thing must have lasted a total of 4 seconds. Terrifying.

Oliver however although a little shocked, didn’t quite realize the danger he’d been in. Afterwards on the boat he said, with much bravado, “I wanted to go under water because I was hot. So… that’s why…”
Yeah right!

Banding your first lobster is probably not a rite of passage for everyone, but for Oliver it certainly was. It had all his favorite things really - semi-dangerous animal, a tool to manipulate. Heaven!

Indulging Obsessions - Apollo 11

My boy is obsessed, obsessed with the Apollo landing, and I LOVE it! We got a book out called “Moonshot” from the library and I swear I could read it to him again and again.

He said to a family friend yesterday, “Did you know… a long long time ago… man went and he landed, on the moon… And it was Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong and The Eagle. Did you know that?”

Happily this current fixation has coincided with the anniversary of said trip resulting in a glut of videos on YouTube and articles in the newspaper. It’s truly fantastic. Today we went to the Science Center to further encourage the lad.

Thankfully, for once, Lola remains unimpressed by this current fixation. Leaving Oliver, liberated from his sisters constant mimicry and adoration.

Running with Abbie

This picture sums up the trip for me. Kids running around. Balmy sunny days. No plans or agendas. My only regret - it was too short. Rather than one week, ideally it would have been one month. But then there’s always next time :)

Oliver & Alex

One of the great things this vacation was all the time the cousins got to spend together. During our short UK trip Alex and Oliver got to catch up a couple of times and really clicked. Even though Alex is a year older than Oliver he’s a really sweet boy who was able for the most part to endure his younger cousins less patient demands. It’s amazing the difference actually between 4 and 5 years old, and Oliver is not even 4 - which is always so unbelievable to people because he’s so tall.

Hot hot hot

Whilst we were in Italy there was a heatwave - you can see in this photo just how hot Oliver looks. He gets really pink.

This photo was taken in Greve in the Chianti region where we had a marvelous lunch. Great great day.
